ListsVidooly leaderboard – the fastest growing Indian YouTube channels so far in 2016

Aravinda Holla3 years ago

I remember reading this interesting article on Variety a couple of years ago about how YouTube stars are taking over the mantle of traditional celebrities in the US. That was the time when the TVF frenzy was catching hold of people (at least the digital population) across India. After reading the article, I had a talk about this with some of my friends, and I clearly remember explaining to them how this would soon be replicated in India. Like a wannabe Nostradamus of Indian digital landscape, I had proclaimed that there would be thousands of famous YouTubers from India within a couple of years. Maybe I was a little too excited!

However, during the course of these two years, the Indian YouTube landscape took an interesting turn. We didn’t see a lot of content creators making a beeline for the platform. Rather, it was the traditional media houses that realized the importance of a digital video angle to their business. TV Channels like Zee Tv, Sony, Colors and music labels like T Series were the ones who devised killer YouTube strategies and grew exponentially as some of the world’s fastest growing YouTube channels. Of course there were new creators, but the count wasn’t really impressive.

But lately, things are turning brighter for the creators from India. Now there are more people experimenting with their content and exploring diverse content niches, looking for their own ‘space’ in the online video giant. They have built a loyal fan following and some of them are even hopping onto other media platforms like Television and cinema.

We wanted to showcase the growth of such YouTubers in our latest leaderboard. This list is based on the number of new subscribers that these YouTubers have added from the beginning of 2016 till the end of May.

Note: The list does not include YouTube channels of production houses or TV Channels, but actual content creators who make stuff exclusively for YouTube.
