Last Tuesday Instagram’s new update offered a “Stories” feature and since then it is being called out for blatantly ripping off Snapchat. Instagram Stories is a new feature that lives at the top of your newsfeed and allows you to pop in a stream of photos that expire after 24 hours, just like Snapchat. With a little tweaks, Instagram took Snapchat’s confusing interface and made it easy to use, enjoyable, and available to its millions of users.
Watch this video by Casey Neistat to know how Instagram murdered Snapchat if you don’t already:
Let’s state some facts of the controversy’s “current state” and put the rumours to rest now.
1. Instagram CEO admits Snapchat should get credit for ‘Stories’:
Many sources say- Instagram’s co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom says Snapchat deserves the credit for ‘Stories.’ He admits in the interview Snapchat has done an awesome job on Stories and deserve all the credit, but that doesn’t mean the format can’t be adopted by other platforms.
2. Instagram Or Facebook are not getting sued by Snapchat:
Not sure how you are supposed to adopt a similar format legally, but as of now nobody is suing anyone. There have been rumours and fake news stories stating fake angry statements being exchanged between Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and Systrom. Right now, there is no reliable source of evidence that says Snapchat is or will be taking any kind of legal action against Instagram for its Stories update.
3. Snapchat is not going down, it is still growing amazingly:
3 Years ago in 2013 when Facebook had offered to acquire Snapchat for 3 Billion USD. But the offer was turned down by the top boss Evan Spiegel. In an interview with Forbes, he had said,
“There are very few people in the world who get to build a business like this … I think trading that for some short-term gain isn’t very interesting.”
When Insta’s Stories feature released, many Hashtags were trending on Twitter directly saying that Snapchat is going down. But it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, Snapchat has big plans to come up with more fun and surprising features for its audience. It’s latest update is a great example, which includes Geo Stickers for 10 cities around the world.
4. But, Snapchat lacks one of Instagram’s key to success:
According to Business Insider– The openness of Instagram’s platform and its superior user base give it a key advantage over Snapchat. Instagram has almost double daily active users from that of Snapchat, as in over 300 million. Users and Advertisers on Instagram can thus potentially tap into a much larger audience. Moreover, Instagram’s platform is open and encourages the discoverability of new content, which helps the audience-building endeavor. Whereas, Snapchat’s is more closed and difficult to find content on unless you already know exactly where to look. Instagram has these certain factors that gives some lead over Snapchat:
-Search functions that make finding friends and content easily.
-Discovery portal to find content from regular users.
-Huge, preexisting followings on the platform.
-Greater ability for content to go viral organically.
