Soon, Instagram may become your next shopping destination. The Facebook-owned company will unveil in-app shopping features in India in mid-2019. Earlier this year, Instagram announced that people will be able to follow links within stories to make purchases. Now, the Instagram shopping feature is being expanded by making a ‘Buy’ button available to the users of the social media app.
In the beginning, hitting the ‘buy’ button below the image of the product you like will take you to the webpage of the online marketplace where you can finalize the purchase. However, as the Instagram shopping feature evolves, people will be able to buy within the app itself. This will be possible once Instagram figures out the back-end operations such as payments, deliveries, logistics and more. Once this becomes a reality, Instagram will make a full-fledged foray into the e-Commerce space.
There are two data points that are crucial to note here. Currently, India has the second-highest number of Instagram users with the number standing at 71 million monthly users. Also, the online fashion market in India is currently valued at more than $4 billion and is dominated by Amazon India and Flipkart-Myntra. This suggests that the Instagram shopping feature move is well-thought out and will boost online sales for e-commerce platforms.
Instagram’s parent Facebook has already ventured into the e-commerce space while Google has also tried to make a mark in the Indian e-commerce space.
The shopping feature on Instagram will not only be beneficial for e-commerce giants but more so for small-sized retailers exhibiting their products on Instagram.
A potential customer will be able to make a purchase immediately, which they had been unable to do so far. It is expected to magnify sales for online brands too, though there’s a speculation that it may give tough competition to these e-commerce platforms in the future.
This new development is an important milestone in the journey of Instagram from merely a photo-sharing app to a full-fledged ecommerce destination now!
