After Dwayne Johnson’s LifeLine and DJ Khaled, Nick Cannon is the latest Hollywood mainstream celebrity to enter the world of YouTube Red. This paid subscription service will mark Nick cannon’s directorial debut with his feature film King of the Dancehall.
King of the Dancehall is about a young man (Nick Cannon) who travels to Jamaica to enter drug trade. Once there, he fell in love between two women which unearths his craze towards infectious dancehall music. Although the music itself is not entirely mainstream in the U.S., but there are audiences who will surely recognize some of the countless dancehall beats and dance moves that American pop stars have been ripping off for years.
Shot in actual Jamaican outdoor dancehall venues, this feature film stars Whoopi Goldberg, Kreesha Turner, and Busta Rhymes as an ebullient selector and Nick’s cousin. This dance off feature is produced by Nick Cannon’s NCREDIBLE Productions studio and was selected to be screened in the special presentations section at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.
According to Hollywood reporter, Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at YouTube welcomed Nick Cannon to YouTube Red world saying “Whether he’s acting, producing or hosting, he has an undeniable ability to make a connection with the audience and keep them captivated. We know our audience, especially the millions of music and dance fans, will be excited to see him back in a lead role. This drama has all the right elements to be incredibly popular on YouTube.”
