Happy Queer Pride Month! This June (any given day), is when we help accept, love, and celebrate one another as the world mourns the tragic events in Orlando.  You’re probably already aware that turning your profile picture into a rainbow signifies that you’re a supporter of LGBTQ rights. Still, there’s a lot more you can do to celebrate Pride month, whether it means going out into your local NGO to help or chilling at your computer, checking out the #ProudToBe YouTube campaign on their YouTube Spotlight Channel.

#ProudToBe

As we all know, YouTube is a place where anyone can belong no matter who they are or who they love. This is the reason why YouTube launched a 2016 initiative this week titled #ProudToBe which will help the LGBTQA community to grow its value among the masses. Since 2013, YouTube has been celebrating this important cause and this year, their centerpiece is the YouTube Spotlight Video starring Gigi Gorgeous, Tyler Oakley, Kat Blaque, Tre Melvin, and more.

In addition to this video, Youtubers uploaded their #ProudToBe video on their own YouTube channels like transgender creator Skylar Kergil, Ashley Mardell and many more as Pride Month is not only about celebration, but also about education, activism, and awareness.

Post Orlando –

Last Tuesday, the LGBTQA community created OneOrlando Fund to serve victims of the Pulse nightclub shootings. Many Multi-National Companies stood ahead with the LGBT QAcommunity, such as IBM, Goldman Sachs, and when Disney donated $1million dollars in response to Orlando, they proved that they are not just a company that is interested in tapping into the LGBTQA market but one that is committed to the well-being of the LGBTQA community.

Even for the Harry Potter World employee who died in the shooting, thousands gathered at Universal Studios and raised their wands for Luis Vielma.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling took to Twitter to express her sadness when she learned of the events and Vielma’s connection to the Wizarding theme park. Former Universal Orlando employee Xavier Emmanuel Serrano Rosado was also among those killed during the attack. The 35-year-old father was a dancer and entertainer who performed at theme parks including Walt Disney World.

According to outandequal.org, there is a 93% increase in the percentage of fortune 500 companies with sexual orientation non– discrimination policies. Just 20 years back, it was less than 4%. A lot has changed in these two decades. This pride month is important to remember the progress that LGBTQA community made over the years.

How much has changed in India?

Nothing. In India, homosexuality was legalized in 2009. However, in 2013 the Supreme Court of India recriminalized homosexual acts. At the same time, transgender individuals have been given new rights and protections.  This is complicated by the fact that sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression are not often discussed in Indian society.

Section 377 is still upheld in 42 former British colonies. When Sir Ian McKellen visited India, he raised concerns about section 377 of the Indian penal code, a colonial-era law dating back to 1861 that makes sex between people of the same sex punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

So, here is a list of 18 other countries where same-sex marriage is legal nationwide and the year it was approved.
