YouTube has showcased thousands of success stories, making superstars out of common individuals. PewDiePie, Smosh, JennaMarbles – all these channels have more than 15 million followers and a yearly revenue that can leave your mouth gaping open! But before YouTube, they were just like any ordinary internet users.

So, what’s the difference between a celebrated YouTube channel and yours? Apart from the creativity and fresh content, these users know how to optimize their channels and use analytics to create a video marketing strategy.

If you are wondering how to do that, then browse no further. Here are a few simple ideas to harness your YouTube channel to get high visibility, build your YouTube audience and earn a few bucks while doing that.

First and most important is fine-tuning your YouTube channel page. Branding will establish your channel’s outlook and rope in the targeted audience. Viewers will be introduced to your channel through a single video that they find in the suggested videos or through search.

Here are some useful tips that can help fine-tune your YouTube Channel’s optimization:

YT Channel icon:

It’s the picture that represents your YouTube channel. You can take some inspiration from YouTube channels such as Vice, IGN etc., and create a catchy image.

Make sure that your Channel icon is Round or square in shape that renders at 98×98 pix.

It’s best to upload an 800×800 image in any of the following formats: JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG

YT Channel art:

You can call it as YouTube’s own style of adding the cover photo. Just like Facebook, you need to choose an image which exemplifies your content and characteristics.

It’s very hard to upload a cover image. Upload an image that’s at least 2560x1440px and file size not bigger than 2 MB according to YouTube guidelines.

If you want to add some text like your channel name or something else, then the safest area to do that is 1546x423px, centered on the image. You can go 507px right and 507px left to flex your text depending on your screen size.

YT Channel description:

It describes you and what your YouTube channel is. It’s shown in the ‘About’ tab and can be an important factor when your viewers want to know more about your channel.

You can add information about your content regularity, what is featured in your channel videos and provide a brief on what your content is going to look like.

You can include up to 1000 characters.

Add links redirecting to your social media pages such as Facebook, or provide a link on your blog.

YT Custom thumbnails:

This is one of the most important factors which decides the clickability of your video. Make sure you choose a vibrant looking picture relating to your video.

Provide a simple text on your thumbnail describing the title of your video. (A viewer can pick top goals in EPL just by looking at the thumbnails featuring in sports category)

Picture specs are 1280×720 (16:9 ratio) as a .JPG,GIF,BMP, or .PNG under 2MB.

Also; add relevant and descriptive keywords to your title, which will help your video stand out in random YouTube searches.

Now that you have fine-tuned your YouTube channel’s visual appeal, you need to make it search-friendly! That’s where Metadata comes into the picture. Metadata is cumulative of a YouTube videos’ title, description, tags, category, and thumbnails.

Here is a brief explanation on how you can improve your Metadata:

2. Describe your Video:

As only the first few lines or 160 characters will appear in search results and above the fold on a watch page, you need to place your top keywords right at that place.

You can also add links to your blog, websites and your other videos or channels you own.

3. Tag Your Video:

Choose right tags and relevant keywords to make your video search engine friendly. Some suggested tags will include brand name, product offering or be a compilation.

Make sure to use quotations (“xxx”), and avoid using commas.

Avoid generic tags or tags that are not relevant to your video as googles algorithm detects the relation of your tags with your content.  You can always change it manually when the video is uploaded.

Alas!
