We’re live at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre to bring you an update on the #FiveAlive bears, Mekong, Mai, Star, LeBON and Kim who were rescued from a bear bile farm last week.
We had some technical difficulties with our previous stream but are trying once more to bring you the latest!
Bear and Vet Team Director, Heidi Quine will tell us how the bears are doing almost a week after arriving at their new forever home.
We’re live at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre to bring you the latest on the #FiveLives bears, Mekong, Mai, Star, LeBON and Kim who were rescued from a bear bile farm last week.
Bear and Vet Team Director, Heidi Quine will tell us how the bears have responded to their first week in quarantine, what issues were discovered during their first ever health checks and what lies in store for these long-suffering bears now that they are safe in our sanctuary.
What we have learned in their first week on the farm is that the farmer’s account of the bears’ ages doesn’t tally with our observations and the official records. He told us during the rescue that he’d had the bears since 1997 – meaning each bear had suffered 21 years of harrowing captivity.
However, we’ve since had a look at the bears, and our vets have done a thorough health check and examined their microchip and government registration information. We’ve learned that given the weight of the bears at the time of microchipping and registration, it seems they were brought onto the farm as young bears, and we believe that their ages are actually between 14 and 18 years.
This is fantastic news as not only have they suffered less years of suffering, they will also be able to enjoy more years of happiness at our sanctuary.
Moon bears can live up to 30 years and we’re committed to caring for these five bears for the rest of their lives.
A rescue is only the beginning. Then comes the hard work of rehabilitation and daily care. A gift from you could help support the intensive care and rehabilitation of Star, LeBON, Kim, Mekong and Mai.
Last week they didn’t have a friend in the world. Now they have you. Please, could you help heal the deep scars, physical and emotional, that cruel bile farming leaves behind?

The #FiveAlive bears full rescue from farm to sanctuary. So emotional to see how they were found compared to where they are now.
All five bears are now in quarantine for 45 days and have been given health care at the sanctuary. We'll bring you a full update when we have it but we have already heard the team believe Mai, who has about 10% vision due to cataracts, will be able to see again. A specialist will be visiting in a few months and the team are hopeful they can give Mai back the gift of sight.
So much is going to change for all five bears over the next few months. After quarantine and necessary surgeries, the bears will move to dens. Here they will be integrated with other bears and regain their strength in a controlled environment. Then, when they are ready, they will be able to join an existing community out on the grass. And their new lives can truly begin.
Rehabilitation is a long road, but it has begun and the bears have overcome so much already.
And you can help them get there. These bears will need daily care for the rest of their lives. Help give them lives worth living. Please, give what you can today: animalsasia.org/FiveLives
This little sun bear just keeps on defying the odds.
After seven years alone in the dark in a tiny cage, she was too traumatised to step out onto the grass.
It took her a year to overcome her fear, but she was braver than she knew and another obstacle in her life was overcome.
Then came time to move to a bigger enclosure with her young sun bear friends Murphy, Layla, Sassy and Goldie. For the younger bears the huge new enclosure was unparalleled joy, but for Annemarie it was another unfamiliar fear to face.
It took her a year before, but this time, in just a month, she's learned to let her heart run free and leave fear behind. For her carers, seeing Annemarie exploring, foraging and behaving just like all the other bears is yet another watershed moment in her rehabilitation.
Due to her mental trauma, it is highly unlikely that Annemarie will ever be able to be released back into the wild, but we're committed to giving her the decades of care she needs.
We couldn't make that commitmen without the support of people around the world and especially to @Miomojo whose funding makes Annemarie's rehabilitation possible.
The bears have arrived at sanctuary!
After 21 years on a bear bile farm, five days on the road and 1,700km of travel, they are finally safe. They are finally HOME!
Now the bears will be unloaded from the rescue truck and taken to the quarantine area where their rehabilitation will begin immediately.
Quarantine lasts 45 days and in this time the bears will receive the health care they so urgently need. Any necessary surgeries will be carried out in this period.
Life has been nothing but misery for these bears their entire lives, but that all ends today. The road has been hard but now they can rest and regain their strength. In time they will meet other bears, move to progressively larger spaces, and - when they are ready - set paw outside in large grassy enclosures.
Our work doesn’t end when bears are rescued. That’s when it begins.
A gift from you could help support the intensive care and rehabilitation Mekong, Mai, Star, LeBON and Kim so desperately need and deserve.
Send a special gift to our five brave little soldiers today to help them build new lives www.animalsasia.org/FiveAlive
