  • Did you know that many of the cut flowers bought in the US actually come from tropical countries? Although the rapid growth of the floriculture industry has created well-paying jobs in Latin America, flower cultivation has very often come at the expense of healthy ecosystems—and therefore the well-being of workers and their surrounding communities. Usually, flower growers use liberal doses of agrochemicals, and with weak government controls, pesticide and fertilizer use on flower farms can threaten the health of workers, neighbors, local drinking-water supplies, and soil.

We respect the livelihoods of our global partners and their environments. That’s why Rainforest Alliance Certified flower farms must comply with strict environmental and social standards. When you #FollowTheFrog to find cut flowers with the Rainforest Alliance Certified “green frog” seal, you show your support for protecting ecosystems and wildlife habitats, conserving water, promoting composting and soil health, and providing workers with decent and safe working conditions.

One way to support healthy soil is to #FollowTheFrog to Rainforest Alliance Certified products. But for people and nature to truly thrive in harmony, that should be just one of many actions. Our personal, daily practices can lead to even further positive environmental impacts.

Do workers’ rights and company sustainability practices influence your purchasing decisions? Follow us on Instagram @RainforestAlliance and view the rules for entry in today's cocoa post’s caption here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnyepPIhqEu

  • Climate change threatens many of our favorite foods, but perhaps none quite as beloved as chocolate. For millions of small-scale farmers in the tropics who depend on cocoa crops to support their families, the impacts of our warming climate are much more severe: their livelihoods and way of life are under threat.

Community and collaboration are key to the sustainability and success of Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. That’s why we are working with smallholder cocoa farmers dealing with droughts, floods, and soaring temperatures, and providing them with training programs on climate-smart agriculture (CSA). CSA gives farmers tools to make their operations more productive and resilient to climate change impacts, while also helping to curb the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Planting native shade trees, using natural pest control, and constructing water-retention systems to make water available in times of drought, are all examples of climate-smart practices.

One way to support a more balanced climate is to #FollowTheFrog to products sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. But for people and nature to truly thrive in harmony, that should be just one of many actions: individual, daily practices, aiming to reduce our carbon footprint, are also pivotal in helping mitigate climate change.

  • Did you know that conventional ways of processing coffee beans can contaminate waterways? That's bad news in rural communities, where many people rely on streams and rivers to drink, wash, and farm. Luckily, coffee from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms is grown in harmony with nature, and protecting waterways is one of many stringent criteria for achieving this certification.

In Rwanda, for example, we’ve worked with local, smallholder farmers to introduce lagoon systems around coffee washing stations that treat wastewater. In Oaxaca, we’ve been working with young people in coffee farming communities to introduce agroforestry—the cultivation of native trees alongside coffee bushes—which stabilizes the microclimate, keeping water in the ground and protecting critical biodiversity, including animals, birds, and plants.

An easy way to support clean and safe water is to #FollowTheFrog and choose products that carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified “green frog” seal. But for people and nature to truly thrive in harmony, that should be just one of many actions. Our personal, daily water-saving practices can lead to even further positive environmental impacts.
