Long before he was Chef Curry, before he broke Chris Paul’s ankles with a crossover on national television and dropped 54 points at Madison Square Garden, there was Stephen, a 5-foot-8 sophomore beanpole for the Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School who needed to be convinced to take more shots. Before he was a top five NBA player and an MVP candidate, Curry was a high school junior whose baggy jersey didn’t fit right over a pair of willowy shoulders, and who didn’t draw the eyes of major colleges in the area. “I don’t know if a stiff breeze would have quite blown him over, but he looked like it,” said Jim Fox, an assistant at Davidson at the time, who helped recruit Curry. “But man, he could play. He could play. Sometimes, people just look physically at a guy and make their minds up. But if you look at what Coach (Bob) McKillop wanted, he was what we were looking for. Curry grew through the next few years at Charlotte Christian School, but never truly picked up the interest of major schools, finishing as the No. 245 player and No. 51 point guard in the 247Sports Composite, a consensus ranking of the top recruiting services. Or at least by the time bigger schools attempted to join the fray, it was too late: Curry had already signed on the dotted line with Davidson. Curry’s high school coach, Shonn Brown, laughs now when he thinks about ordering jerseys for his basketball team. We got brand new uniforms, and this might have been his sophomore or junior year, and when you’re ordering basketball jerseys, you just don’t order very many mediums, much less smalls,” Brown said. “He probably needed a small, but we were able to kind of fit him into a medium pair of shorts. All we had for a jersey top was large. I guess you could say it hung a little bit loose on him. It kept bouncing and shaking around whenever he was running.” (247 Sports) Happy Born Day, Stephen Curry. #stephencurry #stephcurrt #nba #basketball #basketballlovers #bball #warriorw #goldenstate #goldenstatewarriors #stephencurryvideo #stephcurry30 #warriors #gsw #nbabasketball #nbahistory #march #basketballplayer #basketballneverstops #bballislife #ballislife #ballislife🏀 #basketballgame #basketballlife
